The Joy of Paying It Forward
We’ve all heard of the Golden Rule—but do we truly live it? “Do unto others” goes beyond faith; it’s about how we treat one another as people striving to make the world better.
I have a friend—something of a local celebrity—who’s known for what he calls “Cart Karma.” You might have seen this: looking around a parking lot, gathering up stray shopping carts, and returning them to the cart carousel or store. It’s a small gesture; if you’re already walking by, what’s a few extra steps?
Your small action might keep a cart from bumping into a car—saving someone from an unnecessary headache. Maybe it’s cold, and you’re giving the store employee a little extra time indoors. Or perhaps you free up a parking spot just as a busy parent arrives.
My friend jokes that he’s racking up cart karma points for a rainy day when he’ll need a little good luck. Truly, he spreads joy—not just by returning carts, but with his generous spirit every day. I’m sure he’s got plenty of good luck banked.
Whether it’s cart karma, buying someone’s meal, or treating a stranger to coffee, these selfless, anonymous acts are like planting seeds of kindness. Before the end of the month, I want to challenge you to take a moment and perform one intentional anonymous act of kindness.
