Conscious Kindness to the Planet
I like to think of kindness as planting seeds, especially flower seeds, because I just love flowers. Seeds are tiny, but when they bloom, wow, what beautiful results. In our blog series, we’ve discussed self-kindness and kindness toward others. Today, let’s talk about kindness to the earth around us.
Years ago, I had the privilege of working on a gardening and lifestyle TV show, and sustainability was a key focus. Showing kindness to the earth may sound daunting — am I going to have to sort everything into different recycling bins and start composting? Those are great ways to care for the earth, but it can start as simply as not littering and picking up trash when you see it. It can involve thinking about the plants we put in the garden that will last a long time and require less water. Or, for me, trying to avoid fast fashion (trust me, this one has been incredibly challenging as I love a good deal and I greatly enjoy changing up my wardrobe).
A few years ago, I was asked to join the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation. Across the country, Keep America Beautiful chapters are active, and each year they host days of service where you can learn about litter prevention and make a difference. Getting involved, as an individual or a group, in a Keep America Beautiful event in your state is a wonderful way to show Mother Earth gratitude and kindness. And it’s a habit you can continue throughout the year.
