The Power of Presence
How is your January going? If I had to guess, you’re probably emerging from the holiday daze and beginning to feel that familiar sense of urgency as routines return to normal.
Let’s face it—we’re all busy, but how often are we truly present? Over the holidays, I hosted several gatherings at home. One of the most memorable moments was when a friend visited for a small happy hour. She set down her phone, looked me in the eyes, and sincerely asked, “How are you?” Her undivided attention meant the world to me—a simple yet profound act of kindness.
This January, I challenge you to leave your phone on your desk during meetings and be fully engaged with your colleagues. When you get home, put your phone on the charger and spend quality time with your family or unwind doing something you love—whether it’s exercising, cooking, or enjoying a favorite show. Even at the store, try putting your phone on vibrate and only answer if it’s truly urgent, allowing yourself to focus on your surroundings and the people nearby.
Being present creates countless opportunities to show kindness. Could you return a stray shopping cart? Hold the door for someone behind you? Offer a smile or a wave to a colleague in the hallway? Listen when your partner or kids want to share something about their day? Small moments of attention can make a big difference.
This week, give someone the gift of 15 minutes of your undivided presence. If you have a favorite listening tip, share it on social media using #CultivateKindness and tag us!
